What is the best washroom material? Laminate, SGL or MFC?

It can seem an overwhelming and dubious task to ponder the components and benefits of varying washroom materials, but as one of the most visited areas of your workspace, it is essential to do the appropriate research to promote greater wellbeing and employee engagement.

When choosing your washroom, it is advisable to consider the requirements of your users in order to establish the most suitable material. While functionality and style should feature in your design, durability is an essential factor in ensuring the longevity of your product.

MFL offers three different choices of bespoke washroom material, all of which are designed for durability, style and functionality. These materials can withstand a moisture-rich environment and are easily cleaned and maintained. Available in a choice of colours and finishes, additional features include anti-fingerprint, impact-resistant laminates, antibacterial-grade laminates and moisture-resistant core material.

Choose from Laminate, SGL and MFC:

Laminate

Once considered an inferior material compared to modern hardwood, laminate has come on leaps and bounds over the last decade, and is now considered to be one of the hardest wearing surface materials. Due to its enhanced performance properties, it is resilient to scratching, abrasions, impact and general surface wear. It will withstand medium to high use making it ideal for offices and commercial washrooms. It is pleasantly affordable, without compromising on longevity and durability which makes it an attractive option. Our laminate panels come in a variety of finishes and sizes which makes them flexible in design and highly decorative. They are easily installed.

Solid Grade Laminate (SGL)

SGL is made by compressing numerous layers of paper which form hardwearing panels. It is known for its durability and liquid and water-resistant qualities; an ideal choice for high traffic areas such as schools and service stations. It is also a great choice for wet environments such as swimming pools, shopping centres, schools and cafes.

SGL boasts a smooth and impermeable surface which makes cleaning an absolute breeze, and is available in numerous colours and designs; suitable for all commercial washrooms. Due to its durability, it is popular for areas that are at high risk of damage and vandalism such as schools and colleges. Perfect for modern-looking bathrooms.

Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC)

The principle of MFC is very similar to that of laminates but the core is made from chip wood rather than MDF. It is the most cost-effective of the three materials and is suitable for medium-traffic areas. While the melamine face is moisture resistant, prolonged contact may allow water to pass through to the chipboard and cause damage. It is, therefore, important to enforce a strict cleaning regime to prevent the accumulation of moisture and eventual damage. Ideal for small offices or restaurant washrooms and crafted to create attractive areas and perfect spaces.

When choosing your chosen material, we recommend that you consider the following:

- Traffic-level of the area and the environmental condition. Will there be a large or minimal footfall? Is it an area that is vulnerable to vandalism? Is it a dry/wet area?

- Durability. The level of use can contribute to long-term degeneration, so ensure that you opt for a durability that is best suited to usage.
